Originally founded as José Lobero’s Opera House in 1873, the Lobero is the oldest continuously operating theater in California, a city and state historical landmark, and the fourth oldest performing arts theater in the country. The venue was rebuilt in 1924 in a Spanish Colonial Revival style, designed by renowned architects George Washington Smith and Lutah Maria Riggs.
The Lobero Theatre Foundation aims to operate and maintain the Lobero Theatre as a performing arts center and cultural asset to the community, and to present the highest quality productions in music, dance, and theater. Since its inception, some of the world’s most renowned artists have graced this beloved stage. It is also home to many major performing arts groups in Santa Barbara, including Opera Santa Barbara, CAMA, State Street Ballet, Flamenco Arts Festival, and more.
Architectural Digest and Condé Nast Traveller have included the venue among “The 11 Most Beautiful Theaters in the World,” and it is regarded by DownBeat magazine as “one of the best venues to experience live jazz.” The Lobero Theatre is registered as a state and city historical landmark and is California’s only historic performing arts venue that is Green Business Certified.
